Often when he describes a common human emotional situation littlee reader is startled to recognize themselves, and to identify with the character on a level where they might otherwise have felt they were alone.

His word choices, his phrases, how he tells Jake and Janet’s story reveals itself at a steady pace. Want to Read saving….

View all 11 comments. I think that Merullo is a wonderful writer and really brings his characters alive. Really got me involved in the story and characters very early and it was hard to quit reading once I started.

I would recommend this to anyone who needs a love story without complete mush and sadness. It dealt with real life issues and the effects on people and relationships.

I felt Merullo was right on about his characters. It’s so quiet yet so deeply moving; I’m still ruminating on it. This is the kind of story that could be merjllo sappy or become a soap opera, but it n I have read a few of Merullo’s books and have always enjoyed them very much.

I wasn’t quite sure what to make of the first opening chapters, but found myself eventually glued to the story. I don’t always want the escapism of ‘unputdownable’, nor the ease of light romance, but a good story, one that is well written is special indeed- and very rare. I just read it about 2 weeks ago and alreay I am ready to read it again. A more well-rounded character would have had more difficulty, but Jake was surprisingly perfect t i When a writer’s attempt at similes and metaphors don’t resonate with me, then I shut down.

When I got to the stoty page of the book, much to my surprise, the stranger who sent it has written a note, in a type of handwriting that can only be described as “grandmotherly.
